A while ago I was talking about the distracted world and Nicolas Carr’s book. Related to that I found some interesting intiatives to evaluate and act against the distracted world we live. Today let me share just an easy exercise to check how patient we are. Next post I will go deeper in this topic, sharing other intiatives.

So, now, just relax and listen to the waves, do nothing for 2 minutes.

Work-Life balance

Work-Life balance is one of the key issues in my life. I love my job, but at the same time I love being free to do and enjoy whatever I want, that’s why some times it becames an issue. Where is the balance point? In addition, depending on the country where you live, the chances to balance your work-life are different. So, what if we could compare countries? Can you imagine to know which country meets better your needs?

I found this iniative from OECD called, better life initiative, where one can design your own Better Life Index to visualise and compare some of the key factors – like education, housing, environment, and so on – that contribute to well-being in OECD countries. It’s an interactive tool that allows you to see how countries perform according to the importance you give to each of 11 topics that make for a better life.

Holstee Manifesto

Holstee is a company which I knew through their Manifesto. It is a very unique company of clothes and other products. They say they wrote a manifesto, never a business plan. I like them because of their life approach and because they have been able to create a company according to their lifestyle. I have to say, in the past I tried to create my own company according to my lifestyle, but up until now I did no manage … give me more time!
Let me share what catched my attention few months ago (the Manifesto), it is a call to action to live a life full of intention, creativity, passion, and community.

Recently, LifeCycle Film came about as a desire to bring the energy and passion behind the Manifesto to life through something we love-biking. As they say, this Film is a celebration. It is a celebration of gatherings, of diversity, of life, and of the beauty of shared experience. Enjoy it!

És realment net el vehicle elèctric?

Al món tenim un parc de vehicles (turismes) d’uns 800 milions, i només a l’any 2010 es van produir 77 milions. Us feu una idea de la quantitat d’energia que aquests vehicles consumeixen? A grans trets, és el 15% de tota l’energia que es consumeix al món! Això és molt.

Com a consumidor i ciutadà, m’arriben múltiples missatges de les bondats del VE (vehicle elèctric), aquest ens solucionarà els problemes mediambientals relacionats amb la contaminació. Els vehicles verds, com se’ls anomena, ho són perquè no emeten CO2 i són mes eficients energèticament que els de combustió. Els adjectius són certs, però només a mitges:

* És cert, un cotxe elèctric quan funciona no emet CO2. El que no tenim en compte és quin és l’origen de l’energia. Si aquesta energia prové d’una central de carbó o d’una central nuclear, on està la netedat d’aquest vehicle?
* És cert també, un VE és més eficient energèticament que un de combustió, si tenim en compte només la transformació que es produeix al vehicle. Però no ho és tant, si tenim en compte l’energia que s’ha perdut des de la seva generació fins al seu consum al vehicle.

Per entendre la importància de l’origen de l’energia i els seus usos donaré unes dades bàsiques. Segons l’IAE:

* De tota l’energia que consumim al món, el 26% la destinem al transport, 27% a la indústria, 35% a ús residencial i als serveis, 8% altres.
* Només un 10% de l’energia que consumim és d’origen renovable. La resta prové del petroli (33%), carbó (26%), gas (21%), nuclear (6%) i hidroelèctrica (2%).

Ara que tenim dades sobre la taula, anem a valorar l’impacte del vehicle elèctric. Si nosaltres com a consumidors d’energia, només disposem d’un 10% de l’energia d’origen renovable, què passa si tota aquesta la consumeixo per fer anar els VE? Doncs sí, tinc cotxes molts cotxes 100% nets. Però el consum d’energia és caníbal. És a dir, l’energia neta que consumeixo amb els cotxes nets, és energia neta que NO puc consumir quan obro el llum a casa, quan cuin0 o quan produeixo a la indústria. Per tant, de què em serveix tenir un cotxe elèctric??? Avui dia, només per no veure el fum que genero, ja que aquest es genera a alguna altra banda.

No voldria fer demagògia sobre el VE, estic d’acord en que serà un gran avenç perquè els grans fabricants s’estan esforçant en fer vehicles més eficients, més lleugers i en un futur menys contaminants (sobretot en la seva construcció). I és que per decidir si un cotxe és realment net, no hauríem de mirar si treu fum, hauríem de mesurar la seva petjada ecològica des de la seva concepció fins al seu reciclatge.

Per últim, m’agradaria destacar que el VE no és una fi en si mateix, és un mitjà per fer la mobilitat més sostenible. No hauríem de creure, com ens diuen, que omplir les carreteres de VE ens farà ser més sostenibles. Ens farà més sostenibles fer un ús responsable del consum d’energia, un recurs en teoria il·limitat (solar) però que la seva transformació té un impacte no menyspreable sobre el mediambient.

Donau Radweg

This summer we enjoyed the Donau Radweg a nice bike tour along the Danube river. The tour along the river can be quite long (more than thousand km), but we just did a little part, 7 days trip and 350km, from Passau (Germany) to Vienna (Austria), I would say one of the best bike tour I did ever!

Krems, in Wachau is the capital of the white wine. Here we enjoyed to cycle through the wineyards and the white wine!

Teaming, a great initiative

Teaming is a charitable initiative to combine micro donations that individually would not be viable. This is the benefit of teamwork.
Today we had at work a teaming session and we selected the cooperation project we want to support for this 2011. We will support a Fundeso‘s project in Peru.
