Distracted World

Today I read an article about Nicholas Carr and his new book: “What is doing Internet in our brains”. I completely agree with Carr when he says that Internet is eroding our capability to control our thoughts and to think autonomously.
I can see that in my daily life. I cannot remember the last time I was able to read a full online article without being distracted by some ad, a “breaking” news, a new message in my mail box, or a friend willing to chat over facebook with me. That situation influences a lot in my concentration. At least, that only happens to me when I am in front of my computer … what if I had an Smart Phone?
But, please, do not be confused. I am not supporting any conservatism movement against new technologies. On the contrary, I really believe new technologies make our lives easier and I would LOVE to have an Smart Phone. The fact is that I have not learnt how to manage the new technology to be a good tool in my daily live without it becoming a dictator of my concentration.
Carr’s point of view is also interesting when talking about privacy … Internet is great because it connects all of us (one third of the world population), but the question arises: Do we really control our personal information on the net? It doesn’t apply only to personal security, it also apply to freedom of movement and thinking.

As a conclusion, just let me refer to one of the Slow movement principles: Do one thing at a time.
